Mirihi 2009

While many of our photos are similar to the ones we took last year, we did see some different things.

New This Trip:

Whale sharks   These are the largest living fish, growing up to 40 ft, and totally harmless.  We saw three on our snorkel excursion.   One was very large one, but dove too deep for our cameras.  However later a juvenile let us swim along side it.

Manta and Mobula rays   Manta rays are the largest of the rays, with a wingspan reaching 22 feet.  They are simply majestic as they "fly" through the water.  At one point we watched a group of five swim below and around us.  Mobula rays are related, but smaller.  We were lucky to encounter a family group just off our house reef.

Fish swarming    It was mealtime and these fish were swarming, turning directions, and regrouping to form patterns and vibrations to confuse their predators.  We too could swim inside the swam and also found it very disorienting.
