26 + 27 Dec – Iguazu Falls

The Iguazu Falls (pronounced Iguacu ) are on the Argentine/Brazilian border. This is where they filmed “The Mission”.  They are one of the great waterfalls in the world, higher and much wider than Niagara .  An average of 1700m3 of water flows every second over 70m, along 275 falls spread over a 3km crescent.  Almost all the falls lie on the Argentine side, though the most impressive views are from the Brazilian side. Some of the falls, including the spectacular ‘Devil's Throat’, can be explored by a network of catwalks. The Iguazu National Park is also renowned for its variety of tropical flora, birds (440 species including toucans, parrots and a swift that darts in and out of the thundering water).  They are surrounded by tropical forests which are home to much wildlife, including jaguars, pumas, coatis (a raccoon type animal), capuchin monkeys, opossums, tapirs, agoutis and foxes.  We just missed seeing the monkeys, but did see many of the birds, butterflies, and coatis.  And we climbed up the side of the falls Robert De Niro climbed in “The Mission”.
